Sell Polystyrene Scrap
Turn your Polystyrene scrap into cash. We buy GPPS, HIPS and EPS.

What Polystyrene Does Carlin Waste Recycling Buy?
Polystyrene Grades and Forms We Purchase
We buy polystyrene in all major commercial grades and forms, including post-industrial scrap, off-spec production material, and clean manufacturing scrap:
- General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) is a rigid, often transparent material used in food containers, laboratory equipment, and protective packaging. It is the base resin for most solid PS applications. We purchase GPPS in solid scrap form, regrind, and pellets.
- High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is produced by blending polystyrene with rubber. This results in a tougher and more impact-resistant material. It is commonly found in appliance housings and automotive interior parts. We accept HIPS in sheet form, regrind, and compounded scrap.
- Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is commonly referred to as styrofoam, which is technically a registered brand name. It is the lightweight white foam used in packaging cushions and construction insulation. We accept EPS in loose form, baled form, and densified blocks.
Which Businesses Can Sell Polystyrene to Carlin Waste Recycling?
You are a great fit to sell polystyrene to us if your business is located in the United States and:
- You run a manufacturing plant that generates PS sprues, runners, flash, off-spec parts, or production purge on a recurring basis. Injection molding and thermoforming operations are classic sources of clean, high-quality polystyrene scrap.
- You manage a third-party logistics (3PL) or distribution center where EPS foam dunnage, foam-in-place packaging, and rigid PS liners arrive with every inbound shipment and need to be cleared from the dock regularly.
- You are a foodservice distributor handling foam cups, EPS plates, rigid PS containers, or clamshell boxes at scale especially if you need to clear inventory at the end of a season or after a product line change.
- You are a small commercial recycler who consolidates polystyrene from local sources and needs a broker with the market access and buyer relationships to place it competitively.

What Information Should I Send Before Getting a Quote?
Before getting a quote, the information you need to send us for selling polystyrene is:
- Type or grade of your material: Whether it is GPPS, HIPS, EPS, or a mix of grades.
- Form it is in: Loose foam, mechanically baled, thermally densified blocks, regrind pellets, solid scrap parts, or sheet material.
- Approximate quantity: Your total volume for a one-time load, or your average monthly generation for recurring pickups.
- Level of contamination or cleanliness: This includes food residue, adhesive tape, labels, mixed colors, moisture exposure, or any other foreign materials present in the load.
- Your location and preferred pickup frequency: Whether you need a one-time collection or want to set up a recurring schedule (weekly, biweekly, or monthly).
- Any existing documentation or specifications your facility already has: Including material data sheets, chain-of-custody records, or previous test results if available.
How to Prepare Polystyrene for Sale:
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Sort Your Polystyrene by Grade and Type
GPPS, HIPS, and EPS should never end up in the same container. Each material is processed differently and sold to different buyers, so mixing them forces a downgrade on the entire load, even if most of it is clean. Set up designated bins, bags, or pallet areas for each grade at your facility.
Step 2: Remove Labels, Tape, and Contaminants
Remove printed paper labels, adhesive tape, metal staples, rubber bands, wooden pallets, and anything that is not polystyrene from your load.

Step 3: Compact or Bale the Material
Thermal densifiers melt EPS down into dense ingots, reducing volume by 50 to 1 or more, while mechanical compactors produce tight bales that are easier to transport. Even manual compression is better than loose material. For GPPS and HIPS, standard baling produces consistent load sizes that buyers prefer.
Step 4: Store the Material in a Dry, Covered Area
Keep your polystyrene in a covered area away from direct sunlight, and label each container or pallet clearly with the grade and weight. Proper storage protects the value you have created.
How Much Is Polystyrene Worth Per Pound?
Polystyrene prices in the United States fluctuate from month to month. The best way to estimate how much your Polystyrene is worth is to request a direct quote.
Factors That Determine the Price of Polystyrene Scrap
The price of polystyrene is determined by:
- Grade purity is the dominant factor in polystyrene pricing. A load that is 100% clean GPPS or consistent HIPS regrind is worth materially more than a mixed load requiring additional separation at the reprocessor’s facility.
- Form and processing level also drive price. Pellets and regrind are further along in the processing chain and therefore command better prices than raw scrap or unprocessed parts. Thermally densified EPS ingots trade far better than loose foam on a per-pound basis.
- Contamination level has a direct and significant impact on buyer willingness to pay. Food residue, moisture, adhesive residue, mixed plastics, and foreign debris all increase the reprocessor’s cost and reduce the price offered for your material.
- Volume consistency also matters. Regular supply of clean material is more attractive than a one-time load. Consistent suppliers build better relationships and often receive better terms over time.
- Downstream market demand and the price of virgin styrene monomer set the broader pricing context. When virgin PS production costs rise, recycled and scrap polystyrene becomes comparatively more attractive to buyers, which pushes scrap prices up.
- Geographic location affects the net price you receive because freight costs are deducted from buyer offers. Material located near major reprocessing hubs or port facilities typically commands a better net return than material in remote locations.

FAQs About Selling Polystyrene
Does Carlin Waste Recycling Handle Polystyrene Pickup, or Do I Need to Arrange My Own Transport?
At Carlin Waste Recycling, we handle polystyrene pickup directly as part of our service. We include full freight coordination and dock scheduling, so you don’t need to source a carrier or manage any logistics on your own. Once we agree on terms and confirm a pickup schedule, we take care of the collection from your facility. You prepare the material and have it staged at the dock. Our logistics team coordinates the rest, including all transportation documentation.
Does Carlin Waste Recycling Provide Documentation or Certificates of Recycling for Polystyrene?
Yes, we provide documentation and certificates of recycling. We offer full material traceability from pickup to processing, along with verified ESG reporting.
Can I Sell Mixed Polystyrene Grades, or Does the Material Need to Be Sorted First?
No, you can’t sell mixed polystyrene grades to us, the material does need to be sorted first.
Is Styrofoam Accepted, and Does It Need to Be Compacted Before Pickup?
Yes, Styrofoam is accepted. It’s a brand name for EPS foam, which we regularly purchase and place with verified buyers in our network. Compacting it isn’t strictly required, but it’s highly recommended for economic reasons. Because EPS foam is about 98% air, densifying it increases the price you receive per pound. If you don’t have compaction equipment, mention it and we can discuss alternatives for your volume and location.
